Neurodivergence and a Dysregulated Nervous System

Neurodivergence is becoming an increasingly visible part of life for New Zealand families. It is estimated that around one in five young people in New Zealand are neurodivergent.
For parents raising a neurodivergent child, there can be a lot to navigate — ADHD, autism, sensory differences, learning needs, emotional regulation and finding the right support.
But alongside all of this, there is another important part of the picture worth paying attention to, the state of your child's nervous system.
A dysregulated nervous system can make it difficult to concentrate, filter information, tolerate noise, manage emotions, transition between activities or cope with unexpected change. A child may become restless and reactive, overwhelmed by sensory input, or move towards exhaustion and shutdown.
Many of these same experiences can be part of neurodivergence itself, which means it isn't always easy to tell what is coming from your child's underlying neurodivergence and what may be the result of an overwhelmed nervous system.
The key is recognising that neurodivergence and nervous-system regulation are not the same thing.
Neurodivergence is part of how a child's brain is wired. Nervous-system regulation is a state, and that state can change. A child's capacity can expand and contract depending on stress, sleep, sensory load, relationships, environment and what life is asking of them.
And for a neurodivergent child, everyday life may already place greater demands on that system.
Filtering a noisy classroom, navigating social situations, switching attention, coping with uncomfortable sensory input or constantly adapting to environments designed for different brains all require energy.
When those demands exceed a child's available capacity, the nervous system can become increasingly dysregulated.
And then everything can become louder.
Sensory sensitivities intensify. Concentration becomes harder. Emotions rise faster. Executive functioning becomes more difficult.
Small demands can suddenly feel enormous.
This is why nervous-system regulation deserves to be part of the conversation when we are supporting neurodivergent children.
It isn't a replacement for diagnosis, medical care, psychological or educational support, or other mainstream approaches. Nor is it about trying to change your child's neurodivergence.
But if their nervous system is continually overwhelmed, helping it towards greater regulation may reduce some of the additional load they are carrying.
So alongside asking, “How do we support my child's neurodivergence?” there is another question worth asking:
“How regulated is their nervous system?”
